Solomon’s temple, or the First Temple, was located on the Mount Zion and is considered the Holy Temple of Jerusalem. When it was destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar II after the Siege of Jerusalem of 587 BCE, no evidence of Biblical artifacts was found. There have been some findings around the believed location. The temple of Solomon was believed to be built by King Solomon, king of Judah, in the Hebrew Bible. There has been some evidence of a previos Jewish sanctuary being on the same location of the temple. During the kingdom of Judah, the temple was dedicated to YHWH, and it is said to have housed the Ark of the Covenant. Jewish sources state that the Solomon’s Temple stood for 410 years.
There have been limited archaeological excavations for the Temple of Solomon due to religious sensitivities. No excavations have been allowed on the Temple Mount during modern times. Different passages in the Bible state facts about the Temple of Solomon: 1 Kings 6:1–38, 1 Kings Chapter 7, and Chapter 8 describe the construction and dedication of the Temple under Solomon, 1 Kings 6:19 describe when the Temple was dedicated, and the Ark— containing the Tablets of Stone—was placed. Archaeological features in the Bible mention important places such as the Kodesh Hakodashim and the Henkhal.
Several artifacts were found believed to belong to the Temple of Solomon. Nelson Glueck, an American archaeologist, sent several pieces of rock for radiocarbon dating. A thumb-sized ivory pomegranate had an ancient Hebrew inscription "Sacred donation for the priests in the House of YHVH", was believed to have adorned a scepter used by the high priest in Solomon's Temple.
